Miles Davis – Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud (Lift To The Scaffold) - original soundtrack (Complete Recordings)

This soundtrack with the musical cues for Louis Malle's 1958 film Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-On Jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.

Davis was booked to perform at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Davis agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any pre-composed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background.

The soundtrack was not released on its own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album Miles Davis - Jazz Track which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo Or Small Group.

This soundtrack might also be referred to as Elevator To The Gallows (literal translation of the French title), also known as Frantic in the US, also known as Lift To The Scaffold in the UK.

Touch of Evil is a 1958 American film noir written and directed by Orson Welles, who also stars. The screenplay was loosely based on Whit Masterson's novel Badge of Evil (1956). The cast included Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff and Marlene Dietrich.

Peter Gunn is an American private eye television series, starring Craig Stevens as Peter Gunn with Lola Albright as his girlfriend, lounge singer Edie Hart. The series was broadcast by NBC from September 22, 1958, to 1960 and by ABC in 1960–61. The series was created by Blake Edwards, who, on occasion, was also writer (for 39 episodes) and director (for nine episodes).

According to Vincent Terrace, Peter Gunn was the first detective series whose character was created especially for television, instead of adapted from other media.

The series is probably best remembered today for its music, including the iconic "Peter Gunn Theme", which was nominated for an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Henry Mancini. Subsequently it has been performed and recorded by many jazz, rock and blues musicians. The progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer recorded the song, adding synthesizers. The series was number 17 in the Nielsen ratings for the 1958–59 TV season and number 29 for the 1960–61 TV season.

The show's use of modern jazz music was a distinctive touch that helped set the standard for many years to come, with cool jazz themes accompanying every move Gunn made. The music, composed by Henry Mancini, was performed by a small jazz ensemble which included a number of prominent Los Angeles-based jazz and studio musicians. Trumpeter Pete Candoli, alto saxophonist Ted Nash, flutist Ronny Lang, trombonist Dick Nash, and pianist and future composer John Williams provided most of the improvised jazz solos. Williams plays the piano part on the title music ostinato.

Prominent jazz musicians occasionally made on-screen appearances. Trumpeter Shorty Rogers appeared in the episode titled "The Frog" playing flugelhorn as Lola sings "How High the Moon". Drummer Shelly Manne, in addition to performing on the soundtrack album, was credited with a Special Guest role in the 1959 episode "Keep Smiling" playing drums in the "Bamboo Club" combo. Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida plays guitar as himself in the 1959 episode "Skin Deep".

In his autobiography Did They Mention the Music? Mancini stated: "The Peter Gunn title theme actually derives more from rock and roll than from jazz. I used guitar and piano in unison, playing what is known in music as an ostinato, which means obstinate. It was sustained throughout the piece, giving it a sinister effect, with some frightened saxophone sounds and some shouting brass. The piece has one chord throughout and a super-simple top line."

With DUKE ELLINGTON and Billy Strayhorn at the helm, there is no question that the soundtrack to one of the most controversial Hollywood films of its time will take the listener's breath away. 

Released in 1959, the film, Anatomy Of A Murder, was banned in various American cities because of its language and sexual and violent references. But the soundtrack to the film stood out at the very beginning, being one of the best jazz compositions out of all: it lures deep, seductive and eloquent, like the scent of a femme fatale.

The beginning of everything self indulgent and timeless in the post WWII era of the USA. The music was be-bop jazz, the poetry and prose the written word.

This album, much like the movie that it accompanies, is a brilliant assessment of the Beat Jazz movement of the late 1950's. It draws on a selection of landmark jazz recordings, arranged in an intelligent and enjoyable progression. 

From the beginning of the album, you feel it. The music that shaped a generation and continues to shape generations to come. With the first track, which opens the film, we see a young Neal Cassidy and then from track to track, we see the definition of what the Big Beat really was, not one person and not one philosophy. It was like many things in the 1950's, an explosion of sound and color and possibilities.

Anyone whose ever even heard of Jack Kerouac or Neal Cassidy will dig this one.

Eddie and the Cruisers was a movie about the disappearance of a (fictional) leader of a rock band, with an awesome soundtrack to boot. The soundtrack has now become a must have for any avid music collector and proves that 80's music was not all commercialized-synthesized shlock. Retro in sound to the 50's and 60's, with a contemporary edge, it has stood the test of time exceptionally well !

Many have compared the Eddie and The Cruisers/John Cafferty soundtrack to Springsteen's and the E Band's work (hopefully as a compliment and not as a rip off).Let's just say the Boss is the Boss and John Cafferty is John Cafferty. John Cafferty and his band were/are anything but a rip off. He has this very distinct knack for writing original and performing his material with plenty of hooks and upbeat melodies. His vocals are also easily recognized.They seem to have the tough rebellious rockin' edge to them when called for and yet that controllable warm vocal range that allows him to do a great ballad like Tender Years!. The Beaver Brown Band can do no wrong---the sheer artistry and musical synergy between JC & BBB is a great musical force unto itself.
