various artists - Dream With the Fishes - soundtrack compilation

Dream with the Fishes was writer/director Finn Taylor's directorial debut in 1997. The film follows a suicidal man who forms a friendship with a terminally ill man. Taylor has claimed that the film is loosely autobiographical. Taylor himself once spent six years traveling around the country with a friend. In one interview, Taylor claimed, "When I was 19, I contemplated suicide and attempted to hold up a drug store." The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and would go on to earn $460,000 in limited release. The film also received a relatively positive reception from critics. Roger Ebert said that the film, "shows some of the signs of unchained ambition." The Los Angeles Times said "of all the towering blockbusters this summer, 'Dream With The Fishes' has more heart than the lot of them."

Composer Chris Vibberts soundtrack album release "Passage"...music from the movie " Why Not Home?"

Composer Chris Vibberts recent album release "Passage" is the soundtrack for a film he scored called Why Not Home? The movie is about medical practitioners who chose to have their own births at home. Chris describes the score as "a melodic affair with lots of cello, marimba, acoustic guitar, and piano."

Chris Vibberts' work is heard in award winning short, animated, documentary and feature length films, as well as on TV. Chris records and performs with David J (Love and Rockets/Bauhaus) playing sitar, guitar, keyboards, lap steel, Melodica, & flute. He also releases ambient music as Chrystal Für.

Marty's review: "Passage" is a beautifully produced score that combines elements of ambient, classical, world and roots music to create themes of solitude, time passage, anticipation and thoughtfulness. The subtle and at times sombre compositions weave and ebb their way into soundscapes of imagination and curiosity taking the listener in to their own journey of the mind to places only they can conjure up.

The Cold Equations...Original Motion Picture Soundtrack...music by Josh Urist..on CD, vinyl and download

The Cold Equations soundtrack is very real. Inspired by a 1954 science fiction short story by Tom Godwin, the film follows a worker drone on a distant planet who hunts down the corrupt officials responsible for the death of his little sister. The music is emotional, evocative, and riveting—the movie, however, is fake.

Composer Josh Urist isn’t the first musician to use the soundtrack-to-an-imaginary-film conceit, but he and his close-knit crew of musicians breathe new life into the idea. For his goal isn’t kitsch or homage, but instead, the soundtrack concept gives the music an emotional tug that is as real as the film is fake.

Working with co-producer/arranger Stuart Bogie (Superhuman Happiness, Antibalas, Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, TV on the Radio), Urist uses the visual language of film music to conjure moments with visceral impact. A Morricone-esque standoff; a frenetic Quincy Jones-style chase scene; cosmic soul in the vein of Air. While analog synths and drum machines give you the interstellar textures, the acoustic guitars and wind instruments provide the warmth and humor of a human heart beating in the airless vacuum of a distant galaxy.

Urist assembled a team of crack studio musicians to perform, many of them old friends from Urist’s time as a music student in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Contributors include regular Urist collaborator and Masters of Reality bandmate John Leamy (Masters of Reality, Surgery) drums; Colin Stetson (Ex Eye, Bon Iver) saxophones and french horn; David Cook (Taylor Swift, Lizz Wright, Alan Ferber, Jennifer Hudson) organ and pianos; Adam Roberts, bass; Jeff Plankenhorn, weissenborn guitar; Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre) violin; and Rachel Webster (Bernie Worrell) vocals. Urist plays guitars, bass, pianos, vocals, banjo, jaw harp, trumpet, and the Roland GR-500 guitar synthesizer. Bogie plays saxophones, clarinets, drum machines, bass, piano, flute, harmonicas, jaw harps, and drums. Album art and design by John Leamy.

Download via iTunes or Amazon or purchase the vinyl record here.

Marty's review: this soundtrack to the "movie that isn't a movie" is a very convincing and impressive cinematic soundscape. Utilising elements from classic soundtrack composers with contemporary and original creativity from multi-instrumentalist Josh Urist and his collective of equally creative musicians, it conjures up images in the mind of dreamy space travel and places that are not really there. It is very listenable as an album on its own yet you can easily connect it with motion picture sequences from your own imagination.

True Detective...Music from the HBO Series..produced by T-Bone Burnett

This album release was produced by T-Bone Burnett and encompasses 14 tracks from Season 1 and Season 2 of the critically acclaimed series. Artists include Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Lera Lynn and Cassandra Wilson.

Here's one review from Amazon....

"There's something dark and creepy and beautifully moving about this album—fears instilled, faded hopes remembered. Many of the songs feel influenced by sixties-style folk music and Cash-like country, with the exception of the gospel blues-tinged “Sign of the Judgment,” the more modern sounding “Risk,” and the gravelly, conversational “Nevermind.” Feeling at once rusty and new, the tracks that Lera Lynn composed for the show, especially “My Least Favorite Life,” are particularly haunting. As with any good mix, variation is present but not extreme as a vein of a mourning and reflection on death—physical or that of ruined relationships and dreams—threads throughout. An excellent background for an afternoon spent alone, sifting through old belongings and photographs, or driving on the open highway." (By thegreenleaf26 on August 14, 2015)

20 Feet from Stardom...music from the motion picture...various artists

Among the songs included on this album is a new recording of the classic song "Lean On Me," featuring Darlene Love, as well as an original song, "Desperation" performed by The Voice finalist Judith Hill. The iconic Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter," is performed by Merry Clayton, a rare recording from her 1971 debut album of the same name. Also highlighted on the soundtrack are two time-honored backup singer tracks, "Young Americans" performed by David Bowie and "Walk On the Wild Side," performed by Lou Reed

20 Feet From Stardom shines the spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of a life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, 20 Feet From Stardom boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film.

Although these singers are usually relegated to the margins, and few, if any, become household names, their work has defined countless songs that remain in our hearts and collective consciousness. 20 Feet from Stardom juxtaposes the interviews with industry legends and the relative unknowns who support them like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill as they illuminate the art of melding their own distinct voices with lead vocals and reveal their desires for careers as solo artists. It is a celebration of the voices from the edge, which brought shape and style to the soundtracks of our lives.

Morricone Youth Original Re-Score for The Adventures of Prince Achmed

NYC-based band Morricone Youth have recently released their new album, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the oldest surviving animated film, via Country Club records and Light In the Attic.

Morricone Youth was formed in 1999 with a mission statement to compose, re-interpret, perform and record "music written for the moving image." The Adventures of Prince Achmed was written for Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 classic and the oldest known surviving feature film of the same name. This original re-score is a powerful and bewitching excursion through Mid-Eastern exotica, twangin' surf guitar, dub heavy afro-funk and Ethiopiques. It features concertmaster violinist Conrad Harris of FLUX Quartet and String Noise (Northern Spy). This release is the second (following September’s Night of the Living Dead) in a series of a 15 LP/EP vinyl series that coincides with each midnight movie/silent film for which Morricone Youth has written original music and live scored over the past five years at various movie theaters around NYC.

The album is available for preview and streaming HERE at Soundcloud

Over the years, the band has released a number of CD's of re-interpretations of obscure soundtrack music from the past as well as a score to an "imaginary film" entitled "Silenzio Violento," recorded and mixed by legendary engineer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, Dresden Dolls), toured and had residencies at the Knitting Factory, CBGB, Tonic and, most recently, Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) asked the band to compose and perform an original score to Hitchcock's "The Lodger" on Halloween 2013 and the band performed a improvised "chance" piece of reinterpreted French film music dictated by a live chess match between chess masters at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMOA) in connection with its Marcel Duchamp exhibit in 2012. Band members have scored for documentaries and short films and Morricone Youth's original music has been used in documentaries and television programs.

Big Fish...music from the motion picture...score by Danny Elfman

The soundtrack to Tim Burton's neo-classic moving picture Big Fish (2003), starring Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Lange, collects classic pop songs and a score of longtime collaborator Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks!, and others).

The soundtrack also contains a new song from Pearl Jam, specifically written for the movie: 'Man of the Hour'. The soundtrack's songs range from Bing Crosby's early 1930's Jazz hit 'Dinah' to the 1950's nostalgia of Buddy Holly's 'Everyday' and Elvis Presley's 'All Shook Up', right up to the 1960's and 1970's recollections of Canned Heat's 'Let's Work Together' and 'Ramblin' Man' by the Allman Brothers Band. The album was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score
