Miles Davis – Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud (Lift To The Scaffold) - original soundtrack (Complete Recordings)

This soundtrack with the musical cues for Louis Malle's 1958 film Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-On Jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.

Davis was booked to perform at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Davis agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any pre-composed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background.

The soundtrack was not released on its own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album Miles Davis - Jazz Track which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo Or Small Group.

This soundtrack might also be referred to as Elevator To The Gallows (literal translation of the French title), also known as Frantic in the US, also known as Lift To The Scaffold in the UK.

Original release date: 1958; recording period: Dec 1957

Miles Davis, Trumpet; Barney Wilen, Tenor Saxophone; René Urtreger, Piano; Pierre Michelot, Bass; Kenny Clarke, Drums

This complete recordings version was released in 1988. The original soundtrack to the film, as mixed and edited in 1958, can be heard in tracks 17 to 26.

All About "E" - original score by Basil Hogios featuring Joseph Tawadros

2015 Australian movie, All About E is a road trip, a comedy, and a love story. E, a beautiful, young Arabic Australian DJ seems to have it all. She is headlining at a top Sydney nightclub, has a home with her gay best-friend Matt and a world of women at her feet, but looks can be deceiving. Something is missing. When she and Matt, her husband of convenience, stumble on a bag of cash they are forced to hit the road. Suddenly E finds she has burnt too many bridges, and there is nowhere to run to but outback Australia and into the arms of ex-girlfriend Trish who broke her heart. E has to learn to face up to her past. She has to give her family the chance to accept who she really is and find the courage to live her dreams.

The score was composed by Basil Hogios and features renowned Oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros.

Apocalypse Now REDUX...music from the motion picture soundtrack

In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch.

Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley (Amazon review)

Anatomy of A Murder..from the sound track of the motion picture..music by Duke Ellington

With DUKE ELLINGTON and Billy Strayhorn at the helm, there is no question that the soundtrack to one of the most controversial Hollywood films of its time will take the listener's breath away.

Released in 1959, the film, Anatomy Of A Murder, was banned in various American cities because of its language and sexual and violent references. But the soundtrack to the film stood out at the very beginning, being one of the best jazz compositions out of all: it lures deep, seductive and eloquent, like the scent of a femme fatale.

Amelie..a film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet..music from the motion picture....music by Yann Tiersen

Amélie (also known as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain; English: The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) is a 2001 French-German romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet chanced upon the accordion and piano-driven music of Yann Tiersen while driving with his production assistant who put on a CD he had not heard before. Greatly impressed, he immediately bought Tiersen's entire catalogue and eventually commissioned him to compose pieces for the film. The soundtrack features both compositions from Tiersen's first three albums, as well as new items, variants of which can be found on his fourth album, L'Absente, which he was writing at the same time.

Besides the accordion and piano, the music features parts played with harpsichord, banjo, bass guitar, vibraphone, and even a bicycle wheel at the end of "La Dispute" (which plays over the opening titles in the motion picture).

Anima Mundi ... original soundtrack recording ... music by Philip Glass

Anima Mundi is a triumph both experimentally and cathartically coaxing the listener to the edge of their seat and transporting to an "aural theme park", a feat worthy of John Williams or James Horner. It creates a genuinely engaging musical experience in the minimalist style. Philip Glass fans will adore the variety of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic material, and it's unlike anything else he's done.

While there are clearly moments when it's doing it's duty as a sound track, the overarching theme is one of primal, unadorned noise-making, only orchestrated.

The Apostle...music from and inspired by the motion picture..various country and gospel artists

Robert Duvall's triple-threat (producer/writer/director) 1997 film about a fundamentalist Texas preacher whose fiery spirituality and good works are nearly unraveled by his decidedly human lusts is remarkable for a number of things--the star's non-judgmental approach to Christianity undercuts easy stereotyping and his choice in music nicely smudges the modern, artificially drawn boundaries between country and gospel. It's a collection of music that shows what rich diversity there is in music that's been largely marginalized by mainstream marketeers. Highlights include Lyle Lovett's rousing "I'm a Soldier In the Army of the Lord," "In the Garden" by Johnny Cash, and The Carter Family returning to their roots on "Waitin' On the Far Bank of Jordan". --Jerry McCulley (Amazon review)

Afterglow....music from the motion picture....music by Mark Isham featuring Charles Lloyd and Gary Burton

Composer Mark Isham's growing shelf of soundtracks shows a range from orchestral tone poems to ambient soundscapes and shrewd combinations of score and source music cues. But the trumpeter and synthesizer sculptor remains an ardent Miles Davis fan, his penchant for serene horn lines and cool backdrops consistent since his days with the '70s acoustic fusion band Rubisa Patrol and in Van Morrison's band.

Isham's long relationship with director Alan Rudolph provides a plum opportunity in the bittersweet context of this romantic feature, and Isham responds with this suave program of cool jazz originals abetted by a stellar band. Charles Lloyd's ripe tenor, Gary Burton's shimmering vibes, Geri Allen's delicate piano, and Sid Page's violin trade spare lines across the drums and bass of Billy Higgins and Jeff Littleton respectively, for a set that stands on its own as atmospheric, intelligent jazz. --Sam Sutherland

The Austin Powers movies trilogy was big at the box office and made Mike Meyers an International Man of Mystery. The accompanying soundtracks were just as good as the movies with tracks from swinging 60's to the present day with psychedelia, soul, bossa nova, rock and everything in between. A collectors delight and always good to revisit. Here are all three soundtracks in their groovy glory, yeh baby!!

Aeon Flux...original motion picture soundtrack...music by Graeme Revell

Set 400 years in the future, disease has wiped out the majority of Earth's population except for one walled, protected city-state, Bregna, ruled by a congress of scientists. The story centers on Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), the top operative in the underground "Monican" rebellion, led by the Handler (Frances McDormand). When Aeon is sent on a mission to kill a government leader, she uncovers a world of secrets. The exciting and evocative score for the film was composed by Graeme Revell, a master at exploring the dark side of such film worlds as Sin City and The Crow.

After the project bounced from Teddy Shapiro to Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, Aeon Flux finally landed in Graeme Revell's studio, giving him another action flick to score in less than two weeks (remember Tomb Raider anyone?) Stylistically, the result is similar to Tomb Raider, with dominating electronics, but ends up being a more enjoyable listen. Beyond the electronics, Revell takes advantage of sliding cellos and solo vocals in the background to add an Asian feel ("Torture Garden"). Even some of the more ambient parts to the score have piano or other solo instruments accompanying the sounds, making the music easier to listen to ("Cloning Discovery").

Morricone Youth Original Re-Score for The Adventures of Prince Achmed

NYC-based band Morricone Youth have recently released their new album, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the oldest surviving animated film, via Country Club records and Light In the Attic.

Morricone Youth was formed in 1999 with a mission statement to compose, re-interpret, perform and record "music written for the moving image." The Adventures of Prince Achmed was written for Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 classic and the oldest known surviving feature film of the same name. This original re-score is a powerful and bewitching excursion through Mid-Eastern exotica, twangin' surf guitar, dub heavy afro-funk and Ethiopiques. It features concertmaster violinist Conrad Harris of FLUX Quartet and String Noise (Northern Spy). This release is the second (following September’s Night of the Living Dead) in a series of a 15 LP/EP vinyl series that coincides with each midnight movie/silent film for which Morricone Youth has written original music and live scored over the past five years at various movie theaters around NYC.

The album is available for preview and streaming HERE at Soundcloud

Over the years, the band has released a number of CD's of re-interpretations of obscure soundtrack music from the past as well as a score to an "imaginary film" entitled "Silenzio Violento," recorded and mixed by legendary engineer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, Dresden Dolls), toured and had residencies at the Knitting Factory, CBGB, Tonic and, most recently, Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) asked the band to compose and perform an original score to Hitchcock's "The Lodger" on Halloween 2013 and the band performed a improvised "chance" piece of reinterpreted French film music dictated by a live chess match between chess masters at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMOA) in connection with its Marcel Duchamp exhibit in 2012. Band members have scored for documentaries and short films and Morricone Youth's original music has been used in documentaries and television programs.
