The Luc Besson film "Jeanne d'Arc" about the French liberation hero, to whom Serra also wrote the music, was released in 1999. The soundtrack was nominated for the French Film Prize César in 2000 and contains the Noa hit song "My Heart Is Calling".
Jean-Claude Petit (born 14 November 1943) is a French composer and arranger, born in Vaires-sur-Marne. After accompanying jazzmen in his childhood, Petit went to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied harmony and counterpoint. He did the string arrangements for Mink DeVille's Le Chat Bleu album, as well as orchestrating the backing parts to some French pop singles in the mid-to-late 1960s, including those of Erick Saint-Laurent and yé-yé girls Christine Pilzer and Monique Thubert.
In 1973 he composed La leçon de Michette. The song was popular in Italy due to its use in the soundtrack of a well-known Carosello (the Italian TV spot broadcast) from 1973 to 1976.
1979 saw his first major film soundtrack commission (Alexandro Jodorowsky's Tusk), but he had been releasing solo records at least a decade earlier, including at least four for the Chappell Music Library, as well as his album Chez Jean-Claude Petit, released in the early 1970s. In 1976 he collaborated with Pierre Delanoë, Toto Cutugno, Vito Pallavicini in a very popular and funky music for Mireille Mathieu called Ciao Bambino, Sorry. In addition, he was a frequent collaborator with French film music composer Jack Arel: the pair's most well-known production, "Psychedelic Portrait", was featured in an episode of the cult TV series The Prisoner. His scores for The Return of the Musketeers (1989) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) remain perhaps his best known work internationally. In 1995 he was nominated for a Victoires de la Musique award in soundtrack of the year for L'Etudiante Etranger.
Jean de Florette was released in 1986.

Beyond Silence (German: Jenseits der Stille) is a 1996 German film directed by Caroline Link. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 70th Academy Awards. The film tells the story of Lara, who grows up as the daughter of deaf parents. Lara herself is hearing and is fluent in sign language. Even as a young child, she serves as an interpreter for her parents in many situations. At Christmas, Lara receives a clarinet from her Aunt Clarissa, an enthusiastic musician. Lara discovers the world of music, where her parents cannot follow her. In the years that follow, Lara is discovered to be a talented clarinet player. The score is based around a few musical themes (i.e. a love theme, a Lara theme, a togetherness theme). However, these themes are dispersed so nicely, there is never the feeling of listening to the same track several times. The music itself is based around the clarinet (the instrument played by the main character, Lara), the oboe, piano and various stringed instruments. The two vocal tracks "I Will Survive" and "You Were On My Mind" are certainly out of place on the album (and in the movie) and not necessary in my opinion.
Empire of the Sun is one of the lesser known scores by John Williams. The score starts off with a wonderful choral arrangement of the Welsh folk tune, 'Suo Gan'. There are two more choral tracks as well, 'Liberation: Exsultate Justi', and 'Exsultate Justi'. They are similar, but are beautifully composed, and prove that Williams is as much a master of choral writing as he is of fanfares and sweet themes. Williams's own music is quite a mixed grab bag. 'Jim's New Life' is a happy "bustling town" town type piece, while 'The Streets of Shanghai' is a rousing action piece along with the patriotic British march 'The British Grenadiers' Also worthy of mention is 'Toy Planes, Home And Hearth'. This piece is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's simple and elegant, yet masterful, and worth the price of the album alone. This is a must have for all score fans. It's easily on the same level as Williams's other masterworks. 1. Suo Gan 2. Cadillac Of The Skies 3. Jim's New Life 4. Lost In The Crowd 5. It is difficult to find all the right words for a film score that literally can bring you to tears. That is the result of a brilliant and moving composition of a recurring main theme throughout the soundtrack. Rarely do you find music of its kind that has the ability to tug at the heart strings in such a way as in Portman's score to give you a feeling of inner peace.
The score to THE JOY LUCK CLUB is one of those exquisite gems that you always search for but rarely find. The sweeping music is enough to bring you to the verge of tears; it speaks volumes on love, commitment, and pain. The sountrack is beautiful just as is the movie. It mirrors the Chinese culture with grace and honor. One of the best scores of the 1990s, and for the then relative unknown Rachel Portman, a true hallmark in what was the beginning of a rich career. If you're hungry for a good, dramatic score, and one with Chinese overtures, then this will not disappoint.

The movie, released in 1989 and starred Mickey Rourke, Ellin Barkin, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth McGovern and Forrest Whitaker, tells the story of deformed gangster who, with a friend, execute a heist that goes wrong. The music by Ry Cooder suits the general mood of the story... an aural soundscape that blends in with the scenes and is a listening experience within itself.

A special treat for the festive season. This is one of those soundtracks that can not only be listened to at Christmas, but any time of the year.
One of Those Rare Film Soundtracks of Significance....Philippe Rombi is the main composer on this Soundtrack. The entire music excerpts of significance are intact, even the artists who were guests, providing professional opera singers for the voices of the two cinematic actor/singers.
Rombi opens the film about WWI with very eloquent, quiet, lovely solo piano music, and very often he is so sensitive to the message of the film that just when the action looks as though the music should be of the Carmina Burana ilk, Rombi settles for orchestral Adagios. He has elected to use the carols Stille Nacht and Adeste Fidelis for the actor Sprink to sing and uses the voice of the gifted tenor Rolando Villazon to intone the music. To establish the relationship between the two opera singers, Sprink and Anna (Villazon and Natalie Dessay), he has them perform a duet version of Bach's 'Bist du bei mer' - the words of which take on deep meaning as the film progresses. When he has a moment for Anna to sing a solo, he writes his own version of Ave Maria for Anna/Natalie Dessay to sing. It is very lovely.
There are several 'tunes' written for the score - 'Fraternizers' Hymn' ('I'm Dreaming Of Home'), the theme for Anna and Nikolaus - which very well could endure long after the score and film disappear, they are that good.
In all the score is very strong and well played, sung, and conducted. This is a soundtrack that bears attention for lovers of beautiful music.... Grady Harp (Amazon review)
