Miles Davis – Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud (Lift To The Scaffold) - original soundtrack (Complete Recordings)

This soundtrack with the musical cues for Louis Malle's 1958 film Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-On Jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.

Davis was booked to perform at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Davis agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any pre-composed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background.

The soundtrack was not released on its own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album Miles Davis - Jazz Track which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo Or Small Group.

This soundtrack might also be referred to as Elevator To The Gallows (literal translation of the French title), also known as Frantic in the US, also known as Lift To The Scaffold in the UK.

Original release date: 1958; recording period: Dec 1957

This complete recordings version was released in 1988. The original soundtrack to the film, as mixed and edited in 1958, can be heard in tracks 17 to 26.

Jean-Claude Petit – Jean de Florette (Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture)

Jean-Claude Petit (born 14 November 1943) is a French composer and arranger, born in Vaires-sur-Marne. After accompanying jazzmen in his childhood, Petit went to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied harmony and counterpoint. He did the string arrangements for Mink DeVille's Le Chat Bleu album, as well as orchestrating the backing parts to some French pop singles in the mid-to-late 1960s, including those of Erick Saint-Laurent and yé-yé girls Christine Pilzer and Monique Thubert.

In 1973 he composed La leçon de Michette. The song was popular in Italy due to its use in the soundtrack of a well-known Carosello (the Italian TV spot broadcast) from 1973 to 1976.

1979 saw his first major film soundtrack commission (Alexandro Jodorowsky's Tusk), but he had been releasing solo records at least a decade earlier, including at least four for the Chappell Music Library, as well as his album Chez Jean-Claude Petit, released in the early 1970s. In 1976 he collaborated with Pierre Delanoë, Toto Cutugno, Vito Pallavicini in a very popular and funky music for Mireille Mathieu called Ciao Bambino, Sorry. In addition, he was a frequent collaborator with French film music composer Jack Arel: the pair's most well-known production, "Psychedelic Portrait", was featured in an episode of the cult TV series The Prisoner. His scores for The Return of the Musketeers (1989) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) remain perhaps his best known work internationally. In 1995 he was nominated for a Victoires de la Musique award in soundtrack of the year for L'Etudiante Etranger.

Jean de Florette was released in 1986.

Amelie..a film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet..music from the motion picture....music by Yann Tiersen

Amélie (also known as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain; English: The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) is a 2001 French-German romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet chanced upon the accordion and piano-driven music of Yann Tiersen while driving with his production assistant who put on a CD he had not heard before. Greatly impressed, he immediately bought Tiersen's entire catalogue and eventually commissioned him to compose pieces for the film. The soundtrack features both compositions from Tiersen's first three albums, as well as new items, variants of which can be found on his fourth album, L'Absente, which he was writing at the same time.

Besides the accordion and piano, the music features parts played with harpsichord, banjo, bass guitar, vibraphone, and even a bicycle wheel at the end of "La Dispute" (which plays over the opening titles in the motion picture).

Les Chorsites (The Chorus)..original music from the motion picture...composed and orchestrated by Bruno Coulais

Bruno Coulais is a French born film and television soundtrack composer. In 1997 he won the C‚sar Award for his work on the documentary Microcosmos. Great prominence was given to the music in the film, which was a huge success and made Coulais one of the most sought after composers of French film music. His reputation was again confirmed by the soundtracks to Himalaya (1999) and the worldwide hit, Winged Migration (2001).

In 2002 he wrote the soundtrack to one of his biggest and most celebrated films The Chorus (Les Choristes), which subsequently became an international smash and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, and also won Coulais his third C‚sar Award. In addition the song 'Vois sur ton Chemin (Look to Your Path),' was nominated for an Oscar.

Trouble Every Day..Original Soundtrack...Music by Tindersticks

The soundtrack to the 2001 French movie, Trouble Every Day, does its job in setting the brooding, melancholy mood of a brooding, haunting and disturbing film.

For those who aren't familiar with the Tindersticks, imagine a synthesis of Angelo Badalamenti with John Cage, and early Leonard Cohen - performed inside a chapel. No comparisons are fair, since the sound is truly greater than the some of it's possible influences.

"Trouble Every Day" is more of a composed work than something that might have spontaneously come from a rock band. Many of the bass-lines are played (beautifully) by a double bass, and a full orchestra is used to great effect. Eastern sounding hand-percussion, acoustic guitar, and brass section all contribute to a mood that somehow feels both rich and austere.

A Good Year...music from the motion picture..score by Marc Streitenfeld and tracks by various artists

In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis that's as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali's elegant "Il Faut du Temps..."), vintage (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante," Jean Sablon's "J'Attendrai," Tino Rossi's "Le Chant du Guardian"), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony's French redux of "Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini"), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way.

Also included are three cues from newcomer Marc Streitenfeld's underscore, a nimble exercise in instrumental post-modernism whose electronica/folk/neoclassical mélange is as eclectic as the song choices, yet characterized by subtlety and grace. --Jerry McCulley..Amazon

La Femme Nikita: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack..music by Eric Serra

This is one Eric Serra soundtrack in which each track not only fits the scenes in the film perfectly but also evoke images of rich visuals and emotions for the listener. Serra is at his best with this pounding, exciting soundtrack that is a mixture of deep bass, offbeat guitar chords and the beautiful alto sax of Gilbert Dall'Anese. It makes a great listen for writing, driving, or activities where you need some adrenalin flowing!

The sleeve notes give little away, besides saying that the music is performed by the mysterious RXRA, presumably a Parisian studio band. The whole soundtrack has a metallic, late 80s feel to it. There are Lyle Mays-like synthesizer flutters here and there, but it otherwise seems wonderfully disconnected from the rest of the world, in the way that so much French music is.

2. Playing On Saucepans
