Lorne Balfe – Ghost In The Shell (2017)

Ghost in the Shell is a 2017 cyberpunk action film directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Jamie Moss, William Wheeler and Ehren Kruger. It is the first live-action movie based on the Japanese Ghost in the Shell franchise envisioned by Masamune Shirow. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han and Juliette Binoche. Set in a near future when the line between humans and robots is blurring, the story follows Major Mira Killian (Johansson), a cyborg super-soldier who investigates her past.

The soundtrack music composed by Lorne Balfe is an electronic, themed score that is reminiscent of movies like Blade Runner and Tron. It's very "sci-fi" with dramatic beats and soundscapes that suit the story line of the film and add the necessary background. It has never been released commercially and has only been available in digital format.

Mychael Danna – The Sweet Hereafter (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Soundtrack album to the 1997 Canadian film The Sweet Hereafter, written and directed by Atom Egoyan, starring Ian Holm, Sarah Polley, and Bruce Greenwood, and adapted from the 1991 novel by Russell Banks. The film tells the story of a school bus accident in a small town that kills 14 children. A class-action lawsuit ensues, proving divisive in the community and becoming tied with personal and family issues.

The film, inspired by the 1989 Alton, Texas, bus crash, was filmed in British Columbia and Ontario, incorporating a film score with medieval music influences and references to the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, which influenced composer Mychael Danna's music. He used a Persian ney flute along with old instruments such as recorders, crumhorns and lutes, creating "a pseudo-medieval score. The ney performer is Persian music teacher Hossein Omoumi. The score thus combined Danna's interests in old and exotic music. Egoyan stated medieval-style music was used to make the film feel timeless, evoking Brothers Grimm fairy tales and avoiding the feel of a TV movie.

Polley's character, Nicole, is an aspiring singer before the accident, and is seen on stage performing the Tragically Hip's "Courage (for Hugh MacLennan)" and Jane Siberry's "One More Colour". Danna and Polley cooperated to create Nicole's music, with Polley writing lyrics to Danna's original songs and with Danna arranging the adaptations of "Courage" and "One More Colour". The songs were chosen because of their domestic popularity, reinforcing the local nature of Nicole's music. The Tragically Hip's original version of "Courage" also appears in the film.

Elliot Goldenthal – Interview With The Vampire (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Elliot Goldenthal scored the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire, working again with director and frequent collaborator Neil Jordan.

The music is characterized by its full, dramatic sound that complements the film's gothic atmosphere. The classical style helps to coveys the dark emotional struggles of the characters.

The rock band Guns N' Roses covered The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil", which plays during the film's end credits. The song was released as a single CD with "Escape to Paris" as a B side.

The album was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, losing on both counts to the score of The Lion King.

Kate & Leopold...music from the motion picture...composed by Rolfe Kent

Rolfe Kent provides an outstanding score for this James Mangold(director/screenwriter) story from Steve Rogers(original story/screenwriter).

With shades of Henry Mancini, various cues take a fun, quirky and comedy with sprinkles of romance, like "Charade" or "Man's Favorite Sport", much like Mancini, Rolfe lends a flavor of JAZZ, WALTZES and even MARCHES, that seems to fit and work...just give a listen to "YOU DID SO GREAT"(Kate's Theme), like something out of another Mancini film "The Great Race". What Rolfe has done for this picture is to give it texture and fabric that pulls off many scenes. So "film-score-buff" collectors, if it's good listening...you've come to the right place for comedy, light and whimsical music...as Henry Mancini lives through Rolfe Kent.

Hero - original motion picture soundtrack - music composed and conducted by Tan Dun

Hero (Ying xiong) is the 2002 Chinese wuxia film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Jet LI as the protagonist. The famous Chinese classical composer and conductor Tan Dun composed the soundtrack to the movie. His mesmerizing score is based around the story of 'The heaven that unites us all'. It's an amazing and deep soundtrack, with a lot of beautiful cues. The violin play of Itzhak Perlman adds another layer to the different compositions.

On from the captivating main theme the soundtrack fits perfectly with the various moods of the movie. War and love blended with the historical/political/philosophical context. It is a journey you will never forget.

At the time of Hero's release it was both the most expensive and one of the highest-grossing motion pictures in China. The film is based on the story of Jing Ke's assassination attempt on the King of Qin in 227 BC.

Emma...music from the motion picture...composed and orchestrated by Rachel Portman

Rachel Portman's score for Emma is an absolutely perfect fit for the film and won an Academy Award for the composer, a first for a woman in the category. The score is sweet and soothing, at times humorous and at times almost luminous. It is that rare perfect marriage of movie and soundtrack; it's impossible to enjoy one without the other. The light-classical themes perfectly recall the ethereal, good-hearted intentions of Jane Austen's heroine, so enchantingly played by Gwyneth Paltrow. While much of the disc is repetitive, it hardly matters. No one can tire of such beautiful aural pictures.

Amelie..a film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet..music from the motion picture....music by Yann Tiersen

Amélie (also known as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain; English: The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) is a 2001 French-German romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet chanced upon the accordion and piano-driven music of Yann Tiersen while driving with his production assistant who put on a CD he had not heard before. Greatly impressed, he immediately bought Tiersen's entire catalogue and eventually commissioned him to compose pieces for the film. The soundtrack features both compositions from Tiersen's first three albums, as well as new items, variants of which can be found on his fourth album, L'Absente, which he was writing at the same time.

Besides the accordion and piano, the music features parts played with harpsichord, banjo, bass guitar, vibraphone, and even a bicycle wheel at the end of "La Dispute" (which plays over the opening titles in the motion picture).

Thin Red Line ...original motion picture soundtrack..music composed by Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer, trying to avoid war-movie clichés, accompanies the dramatized carnage at Guadalcanal with a weepy and wistful score. Like the Terrence Malick film, the music, with its sad violins and underscored orchestra, invokes a war that is more introspective, a fitting backdrop to the often purple poeticisms in the voice-over narrations. Zimmer provides occasional adaptations to the American folk hymn "Christian Race," but his overall effect is much more otherworldly. Instead of the earthier martial themes associated with warlords or heroes, this is the soundtrack to a melancholy Valhalla, a story seemingly told by battlefield casualties who are already angels. Less predictable is a brief closing track (written by Francesco Lupica) strangely titled "Sit Back & Relax" that sends out a surreal "cosmic beam." --Joseph Lanza (Amazon review)

Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for "Thin Red Line" reminds one of his later work for the movie "Gladiator". At once forboding and ethereal, this soundtrack captures the essence of the island-to-island fighting that characterized the Pacific Theatre of WW2. One never knows what danger lurks behind an innocent palm or in the verdant jungles. In the midst of this are the innocent sounds of Guadacanal's residents singing and the strains of the American folk hymn "Christian Race" that causes one to think of what thoughts the soldiers of both sides might have had about the homes they were so far away from. Hans Zimmer's music creates the mood in the film, and carries it on it's own as a soundtrack. Truly inspired and beautiful.

Shakespeare In Love: music from the motion picture....composed and orchestrated by Stephen Warbeck

Perhaps best known for his soundtrack to Mrs. Brown, Stephen Warbeck's score for Shakespeare in Love follows a similar pattern: Elizabethan themes and light string melodies work together to span a spectrum of moods. An excellent accompaniment to the movie: joyous, lyrical, sweeping, with a nice balance of theme music and incidental music. The same vibrant energy as the movie: throbbing cellos, dancing piccolos, violins by turns weeping and soaring. It stands alone as a 'concert piece' as well as being evocative of an outstanding movie.

Anima Mundi ... original soundtrack recording ... music by Philip Glass

Anima Mundi is a triumph both experimentally and cathartically coaxing the listener to the edge of their seat and transporting to an "aural theme park", a feat worthy of John Williams or James Horner. It creates a genuinely engaging musical experience in the minimalist style. Philip Glass fans will adore the variety of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic material, and it's unlike anything else he's done.

While there are clearly moments when it's doing it's duty as a sound track, the overarching theme is one of primal, unadorned noise-making, only orchestrated.

Cry, the Beloved Country...original motion picture soundtrack...music composed and conducted by John Barry

Original soundtrack recording to the 1995 movie "Cry, the Beloved Country" with music composed and conducted by John Barry and also featuring The Havana Swingsters, Dorothy Masuka and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

"Cry the Beloved Country" was quite possibly the most underrated film of 1995. It was well produced and directed with superbly acted leads by James Earl Jones and Richard Harris. The score by John Barry was vastly overlooked, as well. Africa has been good to Barry. One of his first chances to score a film was "Zulu"(1964), more of which must be said later. Barry also won Academy Awards for both the song and score for "Born Free" (1966), and for the score for "Out of Africa" (1985). His music for "Cry the Beloved Country" is somber, dramatic and in places quite tragic, but like the story there is a claim to dignity and a quiet form of heroism.

A main theme runs throughout the score with secondary themes emerging along the way, and they are all substantial. Barry also pulled a surprise by utilizing his main theme to "Zulu." This would seem, at first glance, to be a form of self-plagiarism, but it is not. The theme in question is a heroic standard in "Zulu." Here, it is haunting and subtle, but clearly was to remind one of the heroism of a people, not the heroism of spear and shield, but of their undying dignity which remains in spite of the troubles that engulf them. This theme is first heard as a train makes its way across the South African landscape to Johannesburg and appears again in several tracks. The temptation to complain about Barry stealing from his own music actually never emerges, instead one is amazed by how he integrated it into what must be regarded as one of his best scores, and that is high praise, indeed.
