Nowhere Boy (Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture)

Nowhere Boy is a 2009 British biographical drama film, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson in her directorial debut. Written by Matt Greenhalgh, it is based on Julia Baird's biography of her half-brother, the musician John Lennon. The movie is about the teenage years of Lennon (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), his relationships with his aunt Mimi Smith (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his mother Julia Lennon (Anne-Marie Duff), the creation of his first band, The Quarrymen, and its evolution into The Beatles.

The soundtrack features several of the songs played by The Quarrymen at the time depicted in the film. New recordings were made featuring performances by Johnson and the Nowhere Boys. Thomas Brodie-Sangster was able to play the guitar before landing his role, but, as he is right-handed, learned how to play left-handed, à la McCartney. Producers negotiated with Yoko Ono for the rights to use Lennon's song "Mother" in the film, which Yoko gave after having watched a private screening of the movie.

The Future Is Unwritten Joe Strummer.....original soundtrack album

A wild mix of Clash and solo cuts as well as some of Joe's favourite tunes he played on his BBC radio show. Fun to hear Joe Strummer as a DJ. A very good romp through the musical influences that Joe absorbed through his life. Joe's narration explains many of the songs' relevance and you get a good idea of all that went in to influencing the Clash and the Mescalero's music.

This music has roots in Americana, rock and Caribbean music and moves along nicely for an excellent listen any time. Joe acts as the DJ, speaking little introductions to various songs by other artists ranging all over the map. Some of the intros are outtakes, like when he first met Mick Jones he thought he looked like Woody Woodpecker. Others are more like actual introductions.

It is great to listen to this album from start to end on a road trip or at work or something, because it moves through distinct moods, stays interesting all the time, like a great radio station of some forgotten era when there was such a thing.

Grace Of My Heart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... music by various artists

A terrific sampler of greatest hits from the heyday of girl groups and the Brill Building--except that none of the songs are actually from that era. What we have here is an incredible simulation--from Allison Anders' unjustly overlooked 1996 movie about the tempestuous life and career of a Carole King- like singer-songwriter (the magnificent Illeana Douglas) who spends years writing for others before finding her own voice. But instead of just licensing the old Shirelles' recordings of Goffin-King hits, the filmmakers came up with the brilliant idea of doing original songs by combining the sensibilities of contemporary artists and their songwriting forebears.

So, for example, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach teamed up to write and perform the power- ballad "God Give Me Strength"; Leslie Gore teams with Larry Klein and David Baerwald for "My Secret Love" (performed by Miss Lily Banquette of Combustible Edison); Gerry and Louise Goffin team with Baerwald for "Between Two Worlds" (performed by Sean Colvin); J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. writes and sings some Brian Wilson/Beach Boys-type stuff ("Take a Run at the Sun," "Don't You Think It's Time"), and so on. Buy the record; see the movie. You won't be disappointed. --Jim Emerson
