The spaghetti westerns of the 60's and 70's were very popular with cinema audiences of the time. The bad guys, the good guys, sometimes a good plot(!), but best of all the music. The twangy guitars and the "widescreen" orchestration fit in perfectly with the desert landscapes and the drama on screen. 

Ennio Morricone was one of the original composers of this genre and all others followed his style. This collection contains some of his classic western themes and will leave you reaching for that six shooter and spurred boots!!

Lorne Balfe – His Dark Materials (The Musical Anthology Of)

 

Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Lorne Balfe’s love of music and writing was evident from an early age.

His childhood home had a residential recording studio where the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Inner Circle would record.

As early as eight years-old, Lorne began writing and selling his composed “jingles” for advertisements, and at the age of thirteen he auditioned to be a percussionist with the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra, becoming their youngest member, and travelled around Scotland with them professionally. It became clear to Lorne that he wanted to become a film composer and in his late teens he started writing letters to other composers in the hope of an opportunity. It was then he decided to move to the U.S., and soon his exceptional career took off.

He has consistently received accolades for his musical compositions. Lorne has worked with many of the most prestigious directors in the industry including Christopher Nolan, Ron Howard, Michael Bay, Cate Shortland, Ang Lee, Christophe Waltz, Jerry Bruckheimer, Sean Baker, and Chris McKay

This Is England is a 2006 British coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Shane Meadows, and starring Thomas Turgoose and Stephen Graham. The plot centres on young skinheads in England in 1983, illustrating how their subculture became influenced by far-right politics. The film's title is a direct reference to a scene where the character Combo (played by Graham) explains his nationalist views using the phrase "this is England" during his speech.

Classical music has always been a strong component of movie soundtracks, whether as the main genre for the score or certain pieces that fit in to the relevant scenes. For this selection I have chosen tracks that may not necessarily be well known in terms of classical music, but are dynamic in their composition. I have also kept them at a listenable length and not included anything too dramatic or morose. It's a beautiful set and an enjoyable listen.

For this selection I have focused on soundtracks composed and performed by Ry Cooder. Ry has been involved in over 17 soundtracks either as a composer or as a contributor. His work as a soundtrack composer is unparalleled and his masterful expertise on the slide guitar is evident in his compositions. He is able to create soundscapes (or "desertscapes" as I like to refer to them) which create stunning atmospheres and backdrops for the images and scenes on the screen. 

This selection is all instrumental and is a soundtrack in itself (think dark crime or contemporary western). It's also useful for that next long road trip or listening to on a lazy afternoon.

Masked and Anonymous is a 2003 drama film directed by Larry Charles. The film was written by Larry Charles and Bob Dylan, the latter under the pseudonym "Rene Fontaine".

An iconic rock legend, Jack Fate, is bailed out of prison to perform a one-man benefit concert for a decaying future North American society. The film touches on many subjects, from the futility of politics to the confusion of loosely strung government conspiracies, to the chaos created by both anarchy and Nineteen Eighty-Four-styled totalitarianism. It further reflects on life, dreams, and God's place in a seemingly increasingly chaotic world.

Fate makes it clear that he "was always a singer and maybe no more than that". He produces no solutions to any of the problems the film presents. Rather, he clarifies that he "stopped trying to figure everything out a long time ago".

15 Minutes is a 2001 satirical buddy cop action thriller film directed and written by John Herzfeld and starring Robert De Niro and Edward Burns. Its story revolves around a homicide detective (De Niro) and a fire marshall (Burns) who join forces to apprehend a pair of Eastern European murderers (Karel Roden and Oleg Taktarov) videotaping their crimes with hopes of becoming rich and famous.
