Romeo Must Die (The Album) 2000 - various artists soundtrack

Romeo Must Die is a 2000 American action film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak in his directorial debut, and features fight choreography by Corey Yuen. The film stars Jet Li, Aaliyah (in her film debut), Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, DMX, and Delroy Lindo. The film marks Aaliyah's only film that was released during her lifetime, before she was killed in a plane crash one year later on August 25, 2001. The plot is loosely related to William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, transplanted to contemporary Oakland with Black-American and Chinese-American gangs representing the feuding families.

Romeo Must Die: The Album soundtrack is composed of hip hop, funk and R&B music. It was released on March 14, 2000 through Blackground Records and Virgin Records in association with Warner Bros. Records (who helped co-financed the soundtrack). Recording sessions took time between May 1999 and January 2000. It was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on May 2, 2000 for selling a million copies. The album sold 1.3 million copies by the end of 2000. Romeo Is Bleeding...original motion picture soundtrack recording...music by Mark Isham

Mark Isham's muted trumpet provides a first rate soundtrack for this compelling film. The music is atmospheric and truly haunting. It has a calming, nostalgic sound to it and brings a sense of longing for simple, yet emotionally fulfilling times. It reminds us that nothing worth having is gained without some kind of loss.

Rancho Deluxe (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)....music by Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett was already three well-received albums towards becoming a populist phenomenon when he undertook his only film score (to date), director Frank Perry's 1975 "modern" Western, Rancho Deluxe. The fact that the film's screenwriter, the highly regarded Thomas McGuane, is Buffett's brother-in-law certainly had something to do with his hiring. In this instance, however, the results are decidedly pro-nepotism.

Buffett's songs and incidental music for this underappreciated antecedent to the likes of Clint Eastwood's Bronco Billy (including an early version of the hit "Livingston Saturday Night") have a raw honky-tonk swagger that would've done Waylon or Willie proud. More than merely a welcome addition to the Parrothead canon, Rancho Deluxe proves to be an anti-Nashville country classic. --Jerry McCulley (Amazon review)

Robocop...original motion picture soundtrack..music by Basil Poledouris..remastered edition with extra tracks

When noted Dutch director Paul Verhoeven moved to Hollywood in the mid-'80s, few could have guessed he would embrace the prevailing action film culture with such unabashed enthusiasm. The assaultive, pulp-on-steroids sensibility of Robocop made it a huge success, but came injected with critiques of American TV and pop culture that were often wrapped in the muscular irony of Basil Poledouris' driving, synth-pumped orchestral score. This new edition of the modern sci-fi classic underscores the point with bonus tracks of the film's jangly TV news and commercial parodies, but it's still the industrial crunch of Poledouris' back-to-the-future neo-modernism that take center stage on this digitally remastered deluxe edition.

Powered by an aggressive performance by a then-newly reformed Sinfonia of London and recorded at legendary Abbey Road (the score's frequent metallic percussion is the studio's fire extinguisher being struck with a hammer), Poledouris' music manages to evoke themes of sacrifice and redemption that are as old as the Bible, yet infuse them with a cold detachment that suggests a future of uncertain humanity. --Jerry McCulley (Amazon review)

The Rocketeer..music from the original motion picture soundtrack...music by James Horner

This exceptional score by James Horner is at times light hearted, dark, ominous and mysterious, but also uplifting and action filled. There are two songs included, Begin the Beguine and When Your Lover Has Gone, which perfectly capture the feeling of the forties, when the film was set. Even for those of us that didn't live during the 30's/40's, the movie is like a period piece you can enjoy that makes the movie come alive.

James Horner, in the same tradition that Korngold and Williams have done, brings about the heroic march to underscore the excitement and thrill of a man flying through the air wearing a rocket strapped to his back. Without it, the film might be dull and lifeless. But Horner's 2/4 time drums the strains of athletes entering the arena to compete, or the Roman army marching triumphant up the great Apian Way, and we smile at his success.

Tracklist:
Main Title / Takeoff 4:30
The Flying Circus 6:30

Jenny's Rescue 3:20
Rendezvous At Griffith Park Observatory 8:10
When Your Lover Has Gone 3:25

Rain..Music from the Motion Picture..featuring music by Neil Finn

Soundtrack to the 2001 New Zealand film, features tracks from Neil Finn, Lisa Germano, Neil's son Liam Finn and more.

Quite a few rock artists have tried to cross over to film scoring with varying degrees of success; Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Peter Gabriel are among the most notable examples. Now we can count Crowded House/Split Enz alumnus Neil Finn among those who have made the jump successfully.

"Rain" is a pleasant mix of new songs and instrumentals - all original. The best tracks are the two songs Finn shares with Edmund McWilliams. They bring an interesting harmonic counterpoint to Finn's usual solo material. Lisa Germano's "Cry Wolf" is also an exceptional track.

The instrumental score tracks are recognizably Neil Finn in style and texture without being recycled songs. His almost-folksy mix of acoustic guitar and keyboards makes for a pleasant combination, and it's interesting to hear him experiment with creating a mood without his signature (and sometimes cryptic) lyrical imagery. All in all, a very good first attempt at film scoring - here's hoping Neil Finn gives it another try in the future.

Henry Mancini:The Pink Panther and The Return of the Pink Panther Soundtrack

Henry Mancini's unforgettable soundtracks to two of director Blake Edwards' 'Pink Panther' films teamed together, 1964's 'Pink Panther' & 1975's 'Return Of The Pink Panther'. A combined total of 25 tracks. This is Henry Mancini at his best. The music from these two films is first rate and very enjoyable and includes many gems. "The Greatest Gift" is a beautiful, haunting ballad and the "Return of the Pink Panther" number is a great, seductive variation on the Pink Panther theme. Of course the original "Pink Panther Theme" is included as well in all it's glory.

the original movie trailer itself is hilarious!

Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run)...original soundtrack

"Lola Rennt" (Lola Runs) is a high speed chase story set on a summer midday in Berlin. It is told from three different perspectives and is driven by a pumping techno soundtrack co-composed by the film's direct Tom Tykwer. The whole album is a pulsating electronic speed trip that owes as much to Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" as to the drummers of Miles Davis' electric phase and the trip hop phantasies of Portishead and Massive Attack. It got the Berlin techno groove down to a populist point that makes it bearable to a wider audience without betraying it's roots.

This is one of those soundtracks that make the film a lot more interesting and valuable, providing the whole atmosphere of speed along with the dynamic images. One can virtually feel the "movement" of the body of Lola and the neccessity to run outside when the first beat of this excellent soundtrack knocks you on the head.
