Henry Mancini – The Jazz Sound From Peter Gunn

Henry Mancini – The Jazz Sound From Peter Gunn (Music Composed By Henry Mancini Arranged By Maxwell Davis, Pete Candoli & Bob Florence From The TV Series Peter Gunn)

Peter Gunn is an American private eye television series, starring Craig Stevens as Peter Gunn with Lola Albright as his girlfriend, lounge singer Edie Hart. The series was broadcast by NBC from September 22, 1958, to 1960 and by ABC in 1960–61. The series was created by Blake Edwards, who, on occasion, was also writer (for 39 episodes) and director (for nine episodes).

According to Vincent Terrace, Peter Gunn was the first detective series whose character was created especially for television, instead of adapted from other media.

The series is probably best remembered today for its music, including the iconic "Peter Gunn Theme", which was nominated for an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Henry Mancini. Subsequently it has been performed and recorded by many jazz, rock and blues musicians. The progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer recorded the song, adding synthesizers. The series was number 17 in the Nielsen ratings for the 1958–59 TV season and number 29 for the 1960–61 TV season.

Pan's Labyrinth, A Film by Guillermo Del Toro - original score/soundtrack - music by Javier Navarrete

Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish: El laberinto del fauno, lit. 'The Labyrinth of the Faun') is a 2006 Spanish-Mexican dark fantasy film written, directed and co-produced by Guillermo del Toro. The film stars Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones, and Ariadna Gil.

The story takes place in Spain during the summer of 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil War, during the early Francoist period. The narrative intertwines this real world with a mythical world centered on an overgrown, abandoned labyrinth and a mysterious faun creature, with whom the main character, Ofelia, interacts. Ofelia's stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal, hunts the Spanish Maquis who fight against the Francoist regime in the region, while Ofelia's pregnant mother Carmen grows increasingly ill. Ofelia meets several strange and magical creatures who become central to her story, leading her through the trials of the old labyrinth garden. The film employs make-up, animatronics, and CGI effects to bring life to its creatures.

The score for Pan's Labyrinth by Spanish composer Javier Navarrete was nominated for an Academy Award. It was entirely structured around a lullaby, and del Toro had the entire score included on the soundtrack album, even though much of it had been cut during production. The album was released on 19 December 2006. Its cover art was an unused Drew Struzan promotional poster for the film.

Henry Mancini – The Music From Peter Gunn (TV Series)

Peter Gunn was an American private eye television series, starring Craig Stevens as Peter Gunn with Lola Albright as his girlfriend Edie Hart. The series aired on NBC from September 22, 1958 to 1960 and on ABC in 1960–1961. The series was created by Blake Edwards, who, on occasion, was also writer (for 39 episodes) and director (for nine episodes).

Peter Gunn is notable for being the first televised detective program whose character was created for television, instead of adapted from other media. The series is probably best remembered today for its music, including the "Peter Gunn Theme", which was nominated for an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Henry Mancini. Subsequently it was performed and recorded by many jazz, rock and blues musicians.

The show's use of modern jazz music was a distinctive touch that helped set the standard for many years to come, with cool jazz themes accompanying every move Gunn made. The music, composed by Henry Mancini, was performed by a small jazz ensemble which included a number of prominent Los Angeles-based jazz and studio musicians. Trumpeter Pete Candoli, alto saxophonist Ted Nash, flutist Ronny Lang, trombonist Dick Nash, and pianist and future composer John Williams provided most of the improvised jazz solos. Williams plays the piano part on the title music ostinato.

Prominent jazz musicians occasionally made on-screen appearances. Trumpeter Shorty Rogers appeared in the episode titled "The Frog" playing flugelhorn as Lola sings "How High the Moon". Drummer Shelly Manne, in addition to performing on the soundtrack album, was credited with a Special Guest role in the 1959 episode "Keep Smiling" playing drums in the "Bamboo Club" combo. Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida plays guitar as himself in the 1959 episode "Skin Deep".

In his autobiography Did They Mention the Music? Mancini stated: "The Peter Gunn title theme actually derives more from rock and roll than from jazz. I used guitar and piano in unison, playing what is known in music as an ostinato, which means obstinate. It was sustained throughout the piece, giving it a sinister effect, with some frightened saxophone sounds and some shouting brass. The piece has one chord throughout and a super-simple top line."

Philip Glass - The Qatsi Trilogy: Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi

Philip Glass (born January 31, 1937) is an American composer and pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. Glass's work has been associated with minimalism, being built up from repetitive phrases and shifting layers. Glass describes himself as a composer of "music with repetitive structures", which he has helped evolve stylistically.

Glass founded the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards. He has written numerous operas and musical theatre works, twelve symphonies, eleven concertos, eight string quartets and various other chamber music and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.

Koyaanisqatsi

The Qatsi trilogy is the informal name given to a series of non-narrative films produced by Godfrey Reggio and scored by Philip Glass:

Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance (1982)
    Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation (1988)
    Naqoyqatsi: Life as War (2002)

The titles of all three motion pictures are words from the Hopi language, in which the word qatsi translates to "life". The series was produced by the Institute For Regional Education, who also created the Fund For Change.

The Proposition...original soundtrack...music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis

The Proposition soundtrack was recorded by Nick Cave in collaboration with Warren Ellis, and was produced for the film The Proposition, released in October 2005. At the 2005 AFI Awards it won Best Original Music Score for Cave and Ellis.

The album is instrumentally focused, and is a departure from Cave's band-oriented compositions. All tracks are directly reproduced from the musical interludes in the film, and feature little alteration from the film score. Many songs on the album are slow-tempo and ballad-like, and the violin work of Warren Ellis becomes the central voice of the album for much of the time. Cave's unusual vocal performances on the "Rider" trilogy of songs brings a particularly haunting and uneasy tone to the album.

Plunkett and Macleane - Original Motion Picture Score by Craig Armstrong

Genre: Electronic, Classical
Style: Trip Hop, Breaks, Score, Downtempo, Contemporary
Year: 1999

Craig Armstrong proved with his Romeo and Juliet score that he can seamlessly mix several genres of music together to create a singular sonic experience. Many have complained that the modern sound of Plunkett and Macleane completely contradicted the movie's pre-industrial revolution setting. But it works in ways a period score would fail.

There's something here for everyone who uses a movie score for imagination fuel. Plunkett and Macleane is full of tension, booming bass, orchestra, angelic voices, nervous sound effects and haunting ambience, and exciting 'driving' pieces that are sure to get your blood flowing. Play It To The Bone - original soundtrack....music by various artists...blues, funk, gospel

So, for a boxing movie starring Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson you were expecting "Eye of the Tiger" perhaps? Surprisingly, this soundtrack doesn't feature any fist-pumping rock anthems, but rather focuses on sultry, sweaty jams and down-and-out blues that suggest these guys prefer to tango in the ring than land blows. Fishbone serve up "Shakey Ground, " a horn-punctuated groove thing. Kirk Franklin delivers his usual brand of ornate spiritualism with "Gonna Be a Lovely Day." Joe Cocker and B.B.King prefer to spit out the urban blues with plenty of polish on "Dangerous Mood." For a rougher look at the blues, John Lee Hooker's classic "Boom Boom" is presented in all its sloppy precision, while Jimmy Rogers and Linda Jackson crank out pure juke-joint fare. Moby wakes things up with the techno-laden "Machete." Alex Wurman and Jacintha slow things back down with the subtly creeping, gospel-tinged "On the Road" and the closing-time lounge tune "Here's to Life," respectively. --Rob O'Connor (Amazon review)

The Phantom..music from the motion picture soundtrack...music by David newman

This is a big symphonic heroic and adventurous score performed with might and power. The London Metropolitan Orchestra simply excels in this score. David Newman uses soaring brass fanfares, a knockout heroic theme, some romantic material, and action music that simply blows you away.

The first two tracks are ominous in nature and start things off on the creepy side with pounding jungle drums and an all male chorus. That all changes however, with "The Phantom" which showcases the heroic main theme with powerful action music. The theme itself is a 7 note brass motif that perfectly captures the hero of the film. "The Escape" is another impressive action cue with bold brass and driving percussion. "The Museum" is a dark and ominous track, while "Flying to the Island" is the exact opposite of that, with a soaring orchestral sound. The love theme is found in "Must Be the Humidity" which is a sweeping, epic motif played mainly on strings. Another instrument that is used throughout this score is the pan flute, played by Tony Hinnigan and Mike Taylor, which gives the sound an ethnic feel.

The last track, "Escaping the Island", is an 8 minute brass finale that really burns. Anyone who is a fan of action adventurous symphonic music or David Newman will definitely enjoy this score.

Henry Mancini:The Pink Panther and The Return of the Pink Panther Soundtrack

Henry Mancini's unforgettable soundtracks to two of director Blake Edwards' 'Pink Panther' films teamed together, 1964's 'Pink Panther' & 1975's 'Return Of The Pink Panther'. A combined total of 25 tracks. This is Henry Mancini at his best. The music from these two films is first rate and very enjoyable and includes many gems. "The Greatest Gift" is a beautiful, haunting ballad and the "Return of the Pink Panther" number is a great, seductive variation on the Pink Panther theme. Of course the original "Pink Panther Theme" is included as well in all it's glory.

the original movie trailer itself is hilarious!

The Passion of the Christ...original soundtrack score...music by John Debney

Amazon.com review:
Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place.

As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. Gibson's vision of the Passion has had many second-guessing his motivations and choices, but Debney's rich, evocative score proves there's nothing wrong with his ears. -- Jerry McCulley

Performance...original motion picture soundtrack...produced by Jack Nitzsche, feat.Ry Cooder

OST of the movie 'Performance' directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg. This eclectic and now RARE soundtrack from the 1970 film was produced by Jack Nitzsche and features contributions from Ry Cooder, Randy Newman, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Mick Jagger. Both Ry Cooder and Randy Newman went on to become excellent film score artists themselves after this one.

A dark, experimental film with the cut-up technique dealing with issue of identity crisis which included graphic depictions of sex, drug use and violence. Warner Bros. studio executives, who believed they were getting a Rolling Stones equivalent of the Beatles 'A Hard Day's Night' (1964), denied the film a cinematic release. 'Performance' was finally released in 1970 after several recuts and changes but is now frequently cited as a classic of British cinema.

The lyrics of 'Memo From Turner' were re-written for this film and so different than on the Rollings Stones' 'Metamorphosis' LP from 1975.

According to Colin McCabe (in his book 'Performance') the Moog synthesizer was so new that none were commercially available and a prototype was used for these recordings in 1968 by Bernie Krause.

Permanent Midnight.....various artists (1998)

The story of former television writer Jerry Stahl (Alf, thirtysomething, Moonlighting) who descends into heroin addiction as his career soars, Permanent Midnight, starring Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Hurley, and Janeane Garofalo, boasts a moody, psychedelicized soundtrack with favored alterna-rockers Girls Against Boys, Art Alexakis of Everclear, and British darlings Gomez, who deliver the quite effective "Get Miles" from their debut album. Prodigy's controversial "Smack My Bitch Up" makes an appearance, as does Moby, but the real highlights belong to Spiritualized, whose "Take Your Time" perfectly complements the tragic, dark mood, and Black Lab, who add the '80s Goth-sounding "Horses" to the proceedings. A mixture of previously released tracks (usually from Geffen acts) and originals written specifically for the movie (Spring Heel Jack's "A Permanent Theme"), the PM soundtrack captures a world in permanent hyperspace, where glitches in the electronic medium communicate alienation stronger than the singer/songwriters who attempt to hit it dead-on. --Rob O'Connor (Amazon review)
