The Passion of the Christ...original soundtrack score...music by John Debney

Amazon.com review:
Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place.

As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. Gibson's vision of the Passion has had many second-guessing his motivations and choices, but Debney's rich, evocative score proves there's nothing wrong with his ears. -- Jerry McCulley

Empire of the Sun by John Williams...original soundtrack 1987

Empire of the Sun is one of the lesser known scores by John Williams. The score starts off with a wonderful choral arrangement of the Welsh folk tune, 'Suo Gan'. There are two more choral tracks as well, 'Liberation: Exsultate Justi', and 'Exsultate Justi'. They are similar, but are beautifully composed, and prove that Williams is as much a master of choral writing as he is of fanfares and sweet themes.

Williams's own music is quite a mixed grab bag. 'Jim's New Life' is a happy "bustling town" town type piece, while 'The Streets of Shanghai' is a rousing action piece along with the patriotic British march 'The British Grenadiers'

Also worthy of mention is 'Toy Planes, Home And Hearth'. This piece is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's simple and elegant, yet masterful, and worth the price of the album alone. This is a must have for all score fans. It's easily on the same level as Williams's other masterworks.

1. Suo Gan
2. Cadillac Of The Skies
3. Jim's New Life
4. Lost In The Crowd
5. Imaginary Air Battle
6. The Return To The City
7. Liberation : Exsultate Justi
8. The British Grenadiers
9. Toy Planes, Home, And Hearth
10. The Streets Of Shanghai
11. The Pheasant Hunt
12. No Road Home / Seeing The Bomb
13. Exsultate Justi

Merry Christmas (Joyeux Noël)...original soundtrack by Philippe Rombi

A special treat for the festive season. This is one of those soundtracks that can not only be listened to at Christmas, but any time of the year.

One of Those Rare Film Soundtracks of Significance....Philippe Rombi is the main composer on this Soundtrack. The entire music excerpts of significance are intact, even the artists who were guests, providing professional opera singers for the voices of the two cinematic actor/singers.

Rombi opens the film about WWI with very eloquent, quiet, lovely solo piano music, and very often he is so sensitive to the message of the film that just when the action looks as though the music should be of the Carmina Burana ilk, Rombi settles for orchestral Adagios. He has elected to use the carols Stille Nacht and Adeste Fidelis for the actor Sprink to sing and uses the voice of the gifted tenor Rolando Villazon to intone the music. To establish the relationship between the two opera singers, Sprink and Anna (Villazon and Natalie Dessay), he has them perform a duet version of Bach's 'Bist du bei mer' - the words of which take on deep meaning as the film progresses. When he has a moment for Anna to sing a solo, he writes his own version of Ave Maria for Anna/Natalie Dessay to sing. It is very lovely.

There are several 'tunes' written for the score - 'Fraternizers' Hymn' ('I'm Dreaming Of Home'), the theme for Anna and Nikolaus - which very well could endure long after the score and film disappear, they are that good.

In all the score is very strong and well played, sung, and conducted. This is a soundtrack that bears attention for lovers of beautiful music.... Grady Harp (Amazon review)

Lone Star Original Soundtrack Various Artists - 1996

Writer-director John Sayles's complex, adult mystery delves deeply into borders at myriad levels, a theme echoed beautifully in this collection of country, blues, norteño, R&B, and folk songs that appear as source cues in the film. Sayles's hand in picking them is evident in terms of both quality and thematic resonance: in a telling gesture, Ivory Joe Hunter's mournful "Since I Met You Baby" is answered with a Spanish cover version, created for the film, featuring Freddie Fender. Whether reinforcing the film's cultural milieu or underlining its emotions, strong performances from Lucinda Williams, legendary Mexican songstress Lydia Mendoza, Little Willie John, Little Walter, and Conjunto Bernal give Lone Star heft far beyond most cinematic song compilations. --Sam Sutherland (Amazon)

Lost Highway...a David Lynch film...Original Soundtrack..featuring David Bowie

Say what you will about David Lynch's Lost Highway film, but the soundtrack is, bar none, amazing. With Lynch serving as executive producer, we get Mr. Trent Reznor producing one of the finest soundtracks ever put together. Not exactly rare, but certainly a "lost" gem. The music itself on the Lost Highway soundtrack is amazing and varied. David Lynch has always made excellent choices for his soundtracks, and this is no exception. The album starts and ends with different edits of David Bowie's 'I'm Deranged'. In between these two bookends, though, anything goes, from heavy/industrial rock (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein) to latin jazz (Antonio Carlos Jobim) to pop/rock (Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed). Of course there are also more 'soundtracky' pieces from Barry Adamson, Trent Reznor and Lynch's 'resident composer' Angelo Badalamenti.

The Big Lebowski (Coen Brothers movie)....original motion picture soundtrack...music by various artists

One of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled "Man in Me" together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive "Hotel California" and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings." Whether taken as a Coen brothers mix tape, a one-album CD carousel, or an apropos souvenir of one wiggy flick, this is a smart, eclectic buy. --Rickey Wright ...Amazon.com

A River Somewhere..original music from the ABC travel series by Liam Bradley

Music from the TV series by Australian composer and musician Liam Bradley. A hauntingly beautiful and exquisite soundtrack that matches the magic and serenity of the locations in the series. Gentle guitars, violin, banjo, harmonica and piano combine to make this most enjoyable and pleasant to listen to. Ideal as background music for contemplating the world or starting your day on a good note.
